The Department of Classics at the University of Virginia is pleased to announce a search for a Latinist to fill the Basil L. Gildersleeve Professorship in Classics. An endowed chair at the University of Virginia is one of the University's most prestigious honors, awarded to faculty of exemplary distinction in their fields according to an independent assessment of their peers.

The anticipated starting date is August 10, 2026. We are seeking to maintain and enhance the academic excellence of the Classics Department by the appointment of a scholar with internationally recognized expertise. Any field of ancient Latin literature will be considered. The Department prides itself on its collegiality and its robust Graduate and Undergraduate Programs.
